How it breaks
Norderney's main wave is Januskopf on Nordstrand, where groynes and offshore sandbanks produce a mellow shorebreak and west-wind-cleaned waves.
Getting there
Park behind the Nordstrand dyke and walk east toward the Surf-Cafe and Surfbox; enter between marked groynes outside the bathing zone.
Watch out for
- Strong rips and whirlpools can form near groynes and between sandbanks.
- Submerged groynes can disappear at high tide and become collision hazards.
- Outside supervised bathing zones, tidal streams and underwater currents are dangerous.
Local detail
The Surfverein installs the Surfbox each spring and removes it in autumn because of storm-flood risk.
Crowd
Parking at Nordstrand is limited in peak season, so surfers often walk along the dyke to the surf zone.
