Your SPF Shouldn't Move With Your Cycle

Hormones can change how skin feels. They do not justify a different SPF, a different burn-time, or a different UV risk by cycle phase. The literature is too thin for that product.

Cycle apps have started to treat sun protection as another phase setting.

Higher SPF in the luteal phase. A shorter burn-time before a period. A warning that you are more vulnerable to UV this week. The framing is careful. The implication is that the app has a photobiology model and that your cycle day belongs in it.

We looked at the literature in April and left the sun math alone.

What the skin actually does

A few things genuinely shift.

Hormones influence melanin production. Skin barrier function, measured as water loss through the skin, can rise a little in the mid-luteal phase. Some people report that their skin feels different. Elasticity, oil, and temperature move around. None of that is imaginary.

There is also one older human paper that reported higher UVB susceptibility, as a minimal erythema dose, between days 20 and 28 of the cycle. It is small, homogeneous, calendar-phased rather than hormone-verified, and it has not been replicated into a modern phototesting literature. No dermatology guideline treats menstrual phase as a UV-risk factor.

That is the whole direct stack. A mechanism, a modest barrier shift, and one thin MED signal. It is enough to say skin can feel different. It is not enough to change the number on the bottle.

Why a moving SPF is the wrong instrument

Sunburn risk is dominated by index, skin type, time of day, latitude, cloud, and how you apply the cream.

A luteal TEWL shift of around 12 percent, even if you grant the two-step inference from barrier to erythema, is a small move next to walking into index 8 at noon. Fitzpatrick type is a large move. Shade is a large move. A cycle-adjusted SPF tells you a small thing and misses the large thing.

It also trains the wrong habit. If the app raises the factor on day 24 and lowers it on day 8, the user is being asked to trust a phase model that the literature will not support. The same cream, the same face, the same park. Different judgement. That is the hydration-target problem in another domain. We already refused to bounce the water goal with the cycle. The sun number gets the same refusal.

Skin that feels more reactive before a period is still a reason to be gentler with it. That is a texture note. It is not a dosimetry note.

What Freyja does

Daily UV comes from the phone's weather data and your skin type. Protection guidance does not change with phase. There is no luteal SPF bump. There is no follicular discount. Burn-time, if it ever ships, is required to stay phase-independent. It is not on now, because even an unprotected estimate is easy to over-read.

What can move is context. In the days before a period, the app may mention that skin can feel different, and that a gentler routine is reasonable. That line never recalibrates the UV index, the SPF suggestion, or the implied minutes in the sun. Weather still has to be fresh. Missing UV stays missing. Cycle phase cannot fill it.

UV still needs a network fetch. Logs do not. Those are different jobs.

The careful answer

If someone asks whether they should raise SPF before a period, the honest answer is:

Skin can feel different across the cycle. Barrier and pigment shift a little. Direct evidence that this changes burn risk in ordinary outdoor life is too weak to act on. Use the index and your skin type. If your skin is already reactive that week, treat it kindly. Do not let an app invent a second climate.

That is the answer the literature supports. It is also the answer the sun screen in Freyja is built to give.
